Is Melangit River Rafting Right for You?

Best fit for travelers who want a shorter run with active rapids

The Melangit River can suit travelers who want a relatively short rafting route with active rapids. The run is not very long, but it still feels dynamic on the water. This route is more suitable for travelers who want a more active river feel, not a calm and easy-going run.

Route length and estimated duration

The route is about 7.5 kilometers long, and the rafting session usually takes around 1.5 hours. This makes it a good choice if you want a shorter river run without a flat overall feel.

Location and Access

Where the Melangit River is

The Melangit River is in Bakas Village, Banjarangkan District, Klungkung Regency, Bali. The river is in western Klungkung Regency, close to eastern Gianyar.

Travel time from Ngurah Rai Airport, Ubud, and Kuta

  • From Ngurah Rai Airport, the drive to the Melangit River area usually takes around 1.5 hours via Jalan Prof. Ida Bagus Mantra. The distance is about 44 kilometers.
  • From central Ubud, the drive is about 50 minutes over a distance of around 21 kilometers.
  • From Kuta, the trip is also usually around 1.5 hours.

Rapid Character and Route Feel

Rapids level

The Melangit River is generally known for class III to IV rapids.

Number of rapids, gradient, and considerable drop

Participants pass around 37 rapids along the route. The gradient on parts of the river is around 1 to 4 meters, with one noteworthy drop of about 3 meters. In some sections, these changes in gradient create short descents along the route.

Maneuvering and water contact

Because the route has many rapids within a shorter distance, the session tends to feel more active. Steering adjustments happen more often, and contact with splashing water is usually higher than on a calmer route.

Scenery Along the Route

Natural setting

The Melangit River is also known for its natural setting. Along the route, you may see tropical greenery, a rural setting, fresh air, bird sounds, and a quieter natural environment.

Rocky river walls and route character

Some parts of the route are indicated by natural rock walls along the sides of the river. The route also has many twists and turns, which add to its more confined and active river character in certain sections.

Basic Flow on the River

Before getting on the river

Before the run begins, participants listen to the guide’s briefing and prepare to enter the river.

During the rafting session

During the run, the main focus is to follow the guide’s directions and adjust to the character of the rapids along the route.

What to Prepare

Clothing and spare clothes

Wear light clothing that dries quickly, so you stay more comfortable during the activity. Bring spare clothes because your outfit will likely get wet.

If you want a more thorough checklist, read our guide on what to wear for rafting and what to bring.

Footwear and essential items

Choose trekking sandals with secure straps or water-friendly shoes that provide good grip. Wet areas around the river can be slippery, so it’s important to have stable footwear.

Keep valuables in a safe place and avoid bringing unnecessary items onto the river.

Phone and camera protection

If you bring a phone or camera, use a dry bag or other waterproof protection to reduce the risk of water damage from splashing water during the rafting session.

Safety reminder before starting

Before the rafting session begins, make sure your helmet and life jacket are fitted correctly. The most important thing is to follow the safety briefing and the guide’s instructions from the start.
