Post Modified Date: February 7, 2026 by Wayan Suadnyana Category: Attractions

A vacation in Bali will only be comprehensive if you have watched Balinese dance performances. Three Balinese dances are prevalent among travelers: the Barong dance, the Uluwatu Kecak & Fire dance, and the Ubud Legong dance. Furthermore, on this page, we write for you regarding the Legong Dance Ramayana Ballet performance, which is held at Puri Saren Ubud Bali (The Residence of the Ubud King).

Bahasa Indonesia, Legong Ramayana Ballet Ubud.

Legong Ramayana Ballet Dance Ubud

Meaning of the word Legong

Legong dance, one of the Balinese dances with many motion variations, is unique and attractive. Although I have frequently watched Legong dance since I was young until now, I still enjoy and never get tired of watching Legong dance.

Furthermore, Legong comes from the Balinese word “Leg,” which means flexible and loose. Meanwhile, Gong is a traditional Balinese musical instrument that accompanies the Legong dance, famous by the name Gamelan.

So, from the meaning of the name, Legong dance means a very flexible dance that must follow the instrument’s sound from the Gamelan, and dancers are not allowed to move at their own will.

Semar Pegulingan Gamelan

The type of Gamelan employed to accompany the Legong dance is the Semar Pegulingan gamelan. Furthermore, the Semar Pegulingan gamelan produces stereo sound and dings comfortably to the ears.

I like listening to music from the Gamelan Semar Pegulingan. Furthermore, the Balinese Barong dance in Ubud also uses the Gamelan Semar Pegulingan.

History of Balinese Legong Dance

Legong dance was created and developed at the end of the 19th century. Also, the Legong Dance is often performed in the Balinese royal palace. In Balinese society, the Legong dance is more familiar with the name Legong Keraton, perhaps because it used to be often performed in the Keraton (Balinese royal palace).

According to tales in Bali, the Legong dance was created by a prince in the Sukawati kingdom. The Sukawati prince got inspiration when he was sick. Furthermore, the prince dreamed of seeing two young girls dancing, and a melodic gamelan accompanied the dance. After the Sukawati Kingdom prince recovered from illness, the dance seen in his dream inspired the Legong dance.

In the beginning, only two young girls in the Legong dance perform. The two Legong dancers will hold hand fans; with these hand fans, the two Legong dancers will perform flexible movements in every part of the dance.

The Story of Legong Ramayana Ballet Dance in Puri Ubud

Legong and Ramayana Ballet dance performances at Ubud Palace carry the Ramayana story. At the opening of the show, the audience will hear and see the musicians of Gamelan Semar Pegulingan start playing Gamelan music. Then, after a while, two Legong dancers began to perform a dance.

After the Legong dance performance, the art show continued with a dance performance by bringing the Ramayana story, so the Ubud Palace dance story is about Ramayana. This show is known as the Ramayana Ballet.

Ramayana Short Story

Most of you must have heard of the Ramayana story or have comprehended the Ramayana story. For those who don’t know about the Ramayana story, here is a short one you will see during the Legong Ramayana Ballet dance performance at Ubud Palace.

There are three main characters in the Ramayana story, namely;

  • Rama. A prince from the kingdom of Ayodhya
  • Sita, wife of Rama.
  • Ravana is a giant who became king in the realm of Lanka.

When Rama, Sita, and Lakshmana (Rama’s younger brother) were in exile in the forest for 14 years, a momentous event occurred in the Ramayana story.

Ravana, tempted by Sita, tries to kidnap Sita by telling his aide to turn into a deer. Then this deer tries to seduce Sita so that Sita becomes interested in catching the deer. After that, Sita asked Rama to catch the deer.

Before leaving to hunt deer, Rama told his younger brother, Lakshmana, to take care of Sita. Then Rama begins his hunt for the deer. When an arrow from Rama pierces the deer, the scream of the deer imitates Rama’s voice.

Sita Kidnapped By Ravana

Then Sita heard the scream from a distance and thought something terrible had happened to her husband, Rama. So, Lakshmana was ordered by Sita to help Rama. Before Lakshmana left Sita alone, he, with his arrow magic, made a magical protective fence around Sita. Lakshmana then asked Sita not to get out of the circle, whatever happens.

After Lakshmana went to the forest to help Rama, Sita was alone. So Ravana transformed into a priest and approached Sita. As a result of Lakshmana’s magical fence, Ravana could not penetrate Sita’s area and asked Sita to leave the fenced area. After Sita came out of the magical fence area, Ravana kidnapped Sita.

Rama’s War Against Ravana

On his way to the Lanka Kingdom, Ravana was confronted by a giant eagle named Jatayu. Then there was a fight between Ravana and Jatayu, and Ravana won the battle.

Furthermore, Rama and Lakshmana finally discovered that Ravana had kidnapped Sita from Jatayu’s news. Long story short, Rama and Lakshmana asked for support from the Monkey armies, led by Sugriva and Hanuman, to attack the Lanka kingdom to restore Sita.

Then a war broke out between Rama and Ravana, which Rama won.

Vacation Transportation Guide

Bali’s best vacation transportation is personal transport, either a car or a scooter. However, for the central Ubud area, you must know the best way to get around because finding a car park in the main Ubud area is quite tricky.

If you stay in the tourist area of central Ubud, which is close to the location of Taman Saraswati temple Ubud, finding Puri Saren palace is very easy; you only need to walk a few meters.

Bali Car Rental with Driver

Then, for those of you who don’t stay in the Ubud area, of course, by using a meter taxi, the cost of vacation transportation to Bali will be expensive.

Suppose you stay in the tourist areas of southern Bali, such as Kuta Beach and the Seminyak area, and want to travel to Ubud. In that case, the best and most economical way is to utilize a Bali car rental service. It’s a good idea to look for a Bali rental car service with a driver if you want to vacation in the central Ubud area.

Employing a car rental service with a driver in Bali, transportation costs are not calculated using a meter but based on the service duration. In addition, finding a car park in central Ubud is challenging. Therefore, we recommend you use a driver, so you don’t have to think about parking the car.
